Woodworm, Steaming and Faces

Work has started on the restoration on ex-GWR China Clay wagon NCB 293 and the photo shows Dan Smith busy cutting the bolt heads to remove the remaining rotten planking from the body. The wagon has been placed on the isolated piece of track alongside the running shed known as 'Bolton's Siding' in honour of a 19th Century engineer famous for supplying some wierd and wonderful rebuilt locomotives to contractors. The wagon will be restored as an NCB internal user wagon when finished and may well end up carrying the loco coal for a while.

Other activities this weekend included the first steamings of both Dubs and Whiston's boilers, this being undertaken on the ground so that any issues can be cealt with prior to returning them to the frames of their respective engines.

The railway was also holding a 'Friendly Engines' weekend, which continues over the 8th and 9th May also. It was reasonably well attended and moderately successful, despite the issues over loco and crew availability which meant the weekend was very much an ad-hoc arrangement. Hopefully the problems behind this, and other ongoing problems, will be addressed soon and increased reliability in all areas will result. Jake Tweedy did manage to capture this marauding steam roller during the weekend and is seen here gloating over his prize... (Mr Whitaker's loss!)
