I thought I would snap this shot to show the arrangement inside the smokebox of Florence No.2 and its giesel ejector.
The exhaust passages come together at the base of the ejector which, although remaining parallel looking at it from the front, actually tapers outwards if viewed from the side. at the top of the blastpipe is a casting containing multiple exhaust nozzles and between each nozzle a much smaller one for the blower, 6 in total fed via the pipe coming up from the right hand side of the smokebox. The chimney has a petticoat inside the smokebox which is attached to the blastpipe assembly to give it rigidity.
This piece of equipment gives a more even draw on the fire and a smoother flow of steam from the cylinders to exhaust with the benefits of reduced back pressure and more power.
Does it work? Well I have nothing to compare it against at the moment, but as previously mentioned Florence does seem to steam easily and have plenty of power. If someone wants to bring an unmodified 16" Bagnall to the railway we would be more than happy to compare the two!
